PEARLS
“Jewel of the Sea” Kyoto cultured pearls are created in the warm waters off the coast of Japan. Divers dive near the coast for fully developed oysters (pearl mussels), which are brought ashore, where they are opened and inserted into a small round ball made of strong mussel shells by a small incision. Below you can read more about pearls.
After the small operation, the oyster is placed in small baskets and put back into the water. Only where the water is clean and free of pollution, but with abundant amounts of plankton and algae that can provide good nutrition, does the oyster thrive well enough to now begin to encapsulate the inserted ball with a layer of shiny mother of pearl. The oyster is inspected at regular intervals to remove any dead oysters.
After 1 to 2 years, the oyster is fished out again, it has now created a beautiful Kyoto cultured pearl. With great skill and many years of experience, the pearls are cleaned, inspected and sorted according to size, shape, surface, luster and color nuance. To achieve the most beautiful appearance, the Kyoto cultured pearls are now gently polished before holes are drilled through the pearls, and they are strung on a string and mounted with a clasp. They are now ready for presentation in the jeweller's window.
The contact with the skin gives extra shine and glow. Pearls are delicate, so do not wear them when you are bathing, sunbathing, in a sauna, or when you are sleeping. Heavy sweating can have a corrosive effect. Pearls are also delicate to hairspray, perfume, creams and should be protected or removed by using hairspray or the like. The pearls must be cleaned.
Wipe your pearls with a soft cloth, preferably moistened with a little plain lukewarm water. Store your pearls separately from your other jewellery to avoid scratching them. We recommend re-threading your pearl necklace every year to reduce the risk of the pearl thread breaking.
